Aather Application

CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Kite
Canon: Hunter x Hunter
Reference: here and here (pre-incarnation)
Appearance: Image

Character Info: (Tell us about your character! Where did they come from? What are they like? What changed them or impacted their life? Try indicating who they are rather than what they do. History is important but the more detailed section should always be their personality/motivations. 400-800 words.)

Born first as a human boy, Kite grew up apparently an orphan living in the sewer systems of an unnamed city, stealing food with the help of several dogs, at least one bird, and even a horse. He was inspired away from this life when he met Ging Freecss, a Hunter generally regarded as one of the best in the world. Ging, who was instantly accepted by Kite's animal companions, saw Hunter potential in Kite, so through stubborn persistence Kite convinced Ging to take him on as a student.

Ging taught Kite the basics of Nen (see Skills), and Kite passed the Hunter Exam easily. As a final graduating challenge, and an apparently far more difficult one than the exam, he then set off to find Ging, traveling around the known world. It was during this time that he encountered HxH protagonist Gon Freecss while visiting Ging's origins of Whale Island. Kite rescued Gon from an angry foxbear mother, and, depending on which canon you use, either recognized Gon as Ging's son and introduced Gon to the world of Hunters (manga, 1999 anime), or failed to make that connection and moved on (2011 anime). He eventually succeeded in locating Ging and began his career as a Contract Hunter.

As a Contract Hunter, Kite took on jobs from corporations and nations, seeming to specialize in areas of biology and ecological research. This correlates with his previously seen affinity for nature and living creatures in general (with a preference for larger organisms). He eventually headed up a team of six younger people in whom he saw Hunter potential; their relationship suggests strong leadership on his part, and easy, mutual respect.

During this ecological survey mission, Kite encountered Gon again. Again, depending on your canon, there was instant fond recognition, or a tense moment where Kite seemed to attack Gon and Killua out of nowhere and then scolds them harshly for disturbing an ant hill and necessitating the death of said ants via Nen bullet. As in the case of the foxbear, Kite was shown to be both unhesitating in killing, but regretful of its necessity, particularly in the case of wild creatures. He was also stern and a little intimidating.

The ants were soon relevant, being of a species known as Chimera Ant which practice a mode of reproduction where genetic material of consumed prey is incorporated into the biological make-up of the next generation of ants. This volatile ability to evolve rapidly makes them very dangerous as they're liable to consume others to extinction. When clues came in indicating that these ants may have begun attacking humans, Kite, along with Gon and Killua, entered a luddite nation called NGL to confirm and hopefully prevent infestation. However, this was interrupted when Kite was killed by a Chimera Ant while Gon and Killua escaped. Fun part: his corpse was reanimated as a creepy training puppet for ant soldiers, but presumably his brain was fed to the Ant Queen.

Okay, here's the even more fun part. Whether due to his Nen ability or Chimera Ant biology or both, the Queen produced a premature ant infant who would later inherit all of the memories of the late Kite, making her essentially a reincarnation. This rebirth textually suggests a powerful will to live. Raised by a soldier ant named Colt who renounced eating humans, the new Kite aged rapidly as expected for the species and took on the name and relationships of her late self. As of entering aather, she appears to be a young girl who is somewhat ant-like, with rat features, because Chimera Ants are more like space aliens than anything else.

Kite's demeanor in both lifetimes is shown to be cool, even cold. She seemed stern, harsh in her reprimands and stoic or professional in her dealings. Among friends, she was warmer, easily flustered and more animated when discussing biological research or life systems. The contrast to this solidity is a preference for high risk which is consistent with the life of a Hunter and also reflected best in her previous incarnation's chosen ability: crazy slots. Crazy slots essentially allowed Kite access to a powerful weapon out of nine preset options. At least two restrictions raised the stakes for this ability: he couldn't choose which of the nine he would roll and he had to use the weapon once before he could roll for a new one. By choosing these handicaps, he increased the overall potential for each weapon and also added an element of surprise to each fight. Played up for humour, he also never rolled a weapon he was pleased to see.

Another limitation that might have also been in play; the Crazy Slots took on the form of an excitable talking clown who was loud and flashy and generally gave Kite a hard time. Serious Kite clearly found this silliness annoying and embarrassing. However, Nen abilities are chosen by their users. Some part of Kite enjoys a good gamble and possibly irritating company that thoroughly destroys illusions of solitude. As a note, Kite will train in Nen while at aather, but her specialization (not set in canon) won't come into play. It's common to develop Hatsu or specific ability when Nen ability has settled down, but with Kite's Chimera Ant potential and the power cap at aather, I can easily handwave that her development never plateaus and she never chooses a specialization.

Memory Loss Considerations: (How would this character be without memories? You don't need to rewrite everything, but consider some major differences. "Because Oedipus doesn't remember banging his mom, he isn't guilt stricken all the time" would be useful to put here. Also consider what sort of trajectory or character goal you have in mind—what sort of arc does your character have in canon, and how would this compare to getting back memories?)

Kite actually has a canonical period of memory loss and regain! Unfortunately, this occurs largely off-panel and in the glimpses we have of her in her tabula rasa state, she's still very much a young child. However, a number of things still shine through. She's still inclined towards the Hunter lifestyle, already independent, assertive, and fierce. [e.g. violent.] Overall, I imagine Kite's personality is very stable even in its most basic state, responsible and measured.

When she begins to acquire memories, the majority of them will involve a life and a body she no longer has access to. She'll remember being able to do things she no longer can, and may not be able to tell how much of that is Aather and how much is her new embodiment. I'm interested in seeing how she settles into her skin, particularly because this is a stage we missed out on seeing in canon.

Skills: (What are your character's skills and abilities, and how would they be affected by the powercap present in Aather? We do not require an exhaustive list! Focus on "What they can do" and "how will you limit this in Aather.")

Two terms to clear up first. In the Hunter x Hunter universe, Hunters are a varied and elite group of people licensed through the Hunter Association after passing a rigorous and often lethal proficiency test. In their world, Hunters are afforded a wide variety of privileges including the right to kill without consequence and to enter most regions of the world, even restricted areas. All Hunters are proficient at Nen. Nen is the manipulation/manifiestation of a living thing's life force (or "aura") and is unique to the user. All living things have aura, but most people are unaware of the Nen. Nen can be used to enhance attacks, shoot bursts of energy, or even conjure objects, and it can be developed and improved with practice over time.

As a Hunter, Kite has excellent tracking skills as well as combat experience. She would have once been skilled at hand-to-hand and a wide range of weapons use. In aather, she will lose specialized combat knowledge and benefits of experience and begin with only the basic fighting instincts of a Chimera Ant (which were admittedly enough to kill her in her first life), and also be subjected to a severe physical powercap.

As a student of Archeological Hunter Ging, Kite would have also had some passing anthropology knowledge as well as language, and as a conservation-oriented Contract Hunter, she would also be familiar with ecology and life-sciences. Without her memories, this knowledge would be basic and instinctual – no fine details, but she would be able to pick up learning systems quickly.

Team Considerations: (What kind of teammate would your character be? How do you think they will fit in or change as a result of being on a team? Remember that getting along with your team is a major part of Aather, so detail in this section is very important.)

Kite worked on her own for a while, but by the canon point she comes from, she's heading up a team made up of unusual individuals which seems to have a friendly and respectful atmosphere. Her tolerance for enthusiasm, theatrics, hot-tempers, and absurdity should be quite high, although she deals with it by being droll. In demeanor, she's reserved and can come across as cold or bored, so it might take some effort on the part of another party to form an intimate relationship. Basically, she's very cool-headed and regardless of her preferences, she would probably mix most easily with outgoing, brash, or silly people.

Team Placement Request: (If applicable! Please note whether or not you have a strong preference—your character would ONLY be playable on a certain team/type of team, or you specifically would like to wait for a particular team regardless of how long it takes—or if you would be happy with any team. We absolutely try to take all placement requests under consideration, but sometimes it's not possible; the more flexible, the better & faster the mods are able to make placements.)

Happy with any team!

/WRITING SAMPLE

Can you play who you've apped? You have a few options here! Please choose one option that will give us the best picture of your character, as well as your grasp on their characterization & voice. All samples are to be written as your character's normal self, preferably from the point in canon from which they are being taken.

Option 1: 3rd Person Scene
Write a traditional third person point of view sample of about 300 words where your character does something. Keep in mind that this should be a showcase for voice & personality, and should be unique to your character in some manner.

The rain hadn't let up by the following morning, but she was aware of it before it came into view, through smell or some other dampened ant instinct. The dog was the very picture of bedraggled, its lanky filthy white fur flattened against its underfed frame. It regarded Kite warily, but didn't back away when she approached, not even when she crouched down to get a better look. Rain streamed off of the old umbrella she was borrowing from Palm, now hiked above them both.

"You're not very cautious, are you?" Kite said when the dog didn't shrink back from her outstretched hand. "You're cornered. Aren't you worried I'm going to eat you up?" They regarded each other silently for a while, Kite's hand hanging between them before the dog finally stepped forward, bumping its head against it. "Ah, but maybe you can also tell I won't."

She really shouldn't. The recent events that had laid waste to the local area meant that the number of strays was really quite high. By now the number of strays staying in what she still considered to be Colt's home was also disproportionately high. The dog bumped her hand again. Well.

"No one's, huh?" she murmured to herself, responding to the demand for pats and running inspecting hands across it from nose to tail. "But someone used to take care of you. Do you want to come with me?"

Whap whap whap. A wet tail smacked her against her legs with enthusiasm and the first gentle hint of a soundless 'woof'. Kite smiled. "Well, okay. Just for a little while. You're very quiet. Very well-behaved. All kinds of families will want you."

She got back to her feet and began to walk. The dog trotted beside her beneath the shadow of the umbrella. "We should pick out a name for you," she continued as her voice fading away beneath the sound of rain. "Jambalaya is a big name for a little dog but... definitely look... or with vegetables... "
